Sarah Palin didn’t bomb at VP debate; still seems without substance
October 7th, 2008 Posted in wtfAlright, so the other day I ripped on the McCain/Palin campaign for a number of reasons and I projected that Palin would make a fool of herself at the VP debate. Now it turns out she didn’t make any blunders at the debate (you can see the whole debate here or read the full transcript here), so the race is far from over (check the recent polls here). I say “not over”, but don’t confuse that with “The VP debate changed anything significant”, because I don’t believe it has, with Obama’s 5-6 point lead, it’s hard to see how the McCain/Palin camp can catch up without a major blunder from the Obama/Biden camp before the election?! Palin simply didn’t stand out or provide any convincing evidence that she is intellectually capable in the highest office in USA.
But back to the debate. How did Sarah Palin really do? If we don’t take into account the low low expectations that was towards her performance and focus on how she responded to the issues being discussed, she didn’t fare all that well. she consistently used cheap party tricks (likely from her days as a beauty pageant contestant) such as stating she “may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear” and similar things, and using folksy language and sticking to what seemed like scripted answers and in at least 10 instances, she gave vague, non-descriptive answers, e.g. on the Iraq exit strategy, global warming, Iranian diplomacy and other very relevant issues to know her stance on. We are not impressed here at barelyadraft! So while we digest this, let’s take a look at the SNL skit made based on the debate to put lighten the air a little…
Now the fact that Biden won the debate, doesn’t really matter. What is scary here is that she came off as well as she did because she appealed to the “regular American” and seemed “folksy” (not the skit above, the real debate
). These are not qualities that really matter in a debate about real “issues”. I am constantly shaking my head in disbelief in how people can make decisions as important as Presidential Election vote far from what is rational and merely on feelings about if they “like” the person or find them like a “regular American”…
