At dinner at some friends’ I know the other day, I was shown a hilarious music video, ala the the song by The Lonely Island called “Dick in a Box“, “I’m on a Boat“, and many others. There are other funny videos, e.g. from Flight of the Conchords. I recommend “Sugar Lumps“, “Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor“. How’s that for buildt quality? Not to many days ago I went for a run with my trusty iPod Nano from back when I lived in The Bay Area, California in 2006, and had to conclude my body’s overall fitness is miles and miles away from living up to my brains new years resolution from back in January of running a marathon. Back then was confident I would run the Copenhagen Marathon, but the result of that I wrote about here.

Anyway, the point of this post was not to highlight my failures, but the build quality of the iPod. I got a call at work the other day from Julie (<= wife to be…can I get a woot-w00000t!!!) who with a “I’m soooo sorry” voice procalimed she “might” have washed the iPod in the washer. Naturally I was excited..I mean c’mon, she had washed some of my clothes, which is like..”YEAH, I should marry this girl” right? So anyway, the defective iPod was considered a goner, but I didn’t care much, as I only use it for running, and that ain’t happening often enough for the iPod breaking being a full-on tragedy…

I did let it dry on the off-chance that it would work again. Then the other day I tried it, and lo and behold, it works!!! with no visible damage at all. Awesome, truly awesome! If only all gadgets were as study as my iPod. There’s a drawback though, I have one less excuse for why I’m not running as often as I should. You can’t win ‘em all.

I love video/music responses to released songs. This one is a little different. I wrote about The LonelyIsland comedy act a short while ago (read it here), when I first saw the Dick in a Box song (Gold I tell you, goooold), and now some girls (www.mstaken.com they’re called) have made kind of a video response to The Lonely Island’s “Jizz in my pants” song. It’s called “I puked in my mouth”. See it below. Good stuff!!

May 1st, I’m off work, and I have done all the chores that needed doing (like buying a present for my friend – apparently very good friend based on the amount I spent on him,running, doing some light fitness, washing some clothes and I have just come back from grocery shopping). I’ve been finding some great music lately that I thought I’d share. Three artists actually, and they’re not that new, but recently I have started liking them more and more. So here are three songs that, one for each that they’ve done.

The genre kinda folk/pop/indie, ala Jason Mraz, Matt Costa, Jack Johnson.

WTF!!! I heard this song below on last.fm radio and I thougth “yeah this songs, gets me in a good mood”. Sure, some of my friends will say this kind of music is gay (and that I’m gay… you know who you are!!), but anyway, I found myself walking around the apartment singing along to the song (not the lyrics btw, just the daadadaadaada), and wanted others to feel the good vibes this song puts out there – you know, share the wealth and all. So I found the song on youtube with the lyrics spelled out and it kinda cements (for good this time) that I just don’t listen to lyrics….well play it below and you be the judge…good vibes? :X

Getting new music by recording it with LastSharp (English)

How cool is this! I’m sure you’ve heard of last.fm – the site that scrobbles all the music you listen to (provided you install their client). More importantly it has a radio feature where you type in an artist you like and press the “play artists similar to the one I like) and presto!! so be it! This is what I use last.fm for the most, and just the other day I fell over this little gem called LastSharp (site is in German), that records the songs you listen to on last.fm, presumably with cover art and filled in ID3 tags, so all ready to go!Time to get your radio-music-gettin’ on!

I haven’t tried it myself as I am not quite sure if it is legal in Denmark, but logically it should be as it is just recording online radio, and recording radio is legal. But you know, I better stay out of harms way. But intriguing program right?

WTF!!! I was celebrating Easter with my family (for the ritual, not the religious nonsense) during the week and then my dad out of the blue announces he wants me to buy him a netbook. This, mind you, is a person who, up until that very day, hasn’t ever owned a laptop!

Alright, before we take this any further, let’s get the right kind of music playing. So mute whatever you have playing and let’s listen to Weird Al Yankovic’s “White & Nerdy. ‘Cause I’m gonna tell you right now..it’s gonna get nerdy when we get going!

The road to ASUS EEE 1000H

So my dad wanted a netbook. After I had recovered from the initial shock I had to find him the right one. A painful exercise, since I want one – and not because I need one, but damnit, it’s a tech gadget!

Finding one was not very hard – the way I look at it, you have to make four decisions before you have

2000 DKK, 3000 or 4000 DKK range (which will limit your choices)
8.9″ screen or 10.1″ screen
Small capacity (8/16GB) SSD or large (160GB) regular hard drive
Built in 3G modem or no built in modem
Color (pink, black, lime, whatever, but it’s the specs that count!!!)

So far from what I have researched, the brand matters very little and the various models are basically exactly the same.

So in the end my dad was really hooked on the Dell Mini 9 with SSD. I convinced him that it would probably be better for him and my mom if they took a 10″ screen and then the ASUS eee 1000 was the obvious choice, given my dad didn’t want built in 3G (a decision I think he will regret, but whatever). If I were to buy one, I would go for the LG X110 or X120 with built in 3G or the (not in DKK yet) hybrid X115. For all models, price shouldn’t matter (as they are in the expensive end of the netbook spectrum). Of course the built in 3G wouldn’t be necessary if Apple just freaking allowed tethering on the iPhone!!! Come on firmware version 3.0.

Another thing my dad got installed was wireless internet in Summer house, and he had the nerve to encrypt it with the “new” WPA2 encryption which my old IBM x60s (yes, from before Lenovo stopped using the IBM brand) doesn’t support (ffs). My dad hasn’t been slow to tease me with this btw…

So what do I have to counter? Dell Latitude E4300

Luckily it was time to upgrade my trusty work laptop to a new one (we changed laptops every 3 years at work), so what should I get?! There were two options to choose from. Either stick with Lenovo and get the x200s or try something different and go for the Dell Latitude E4300.

While I have been VERY happy with my IBM x60s (and the T43 it replaced), there are a few things that annoy me which made me wanting to try something else.

No built in webcam
Screen resolution is a paltry 1024*768 (the x200 still only 1200×800 in the configuration we are offered at work)
No SSD drive
The “Fn” key is located to the left of the CTRL key (I like it the other way around)

Switching away from IBM/Lenovo is a big choice. I have ONE must for my laptops – it has to have a TrackPoint. I can’t work with a touchpad, I can’t and I won’t. And the Dell E4300 had a TrackPoint, so I wanted to give it a try. It didn’t hurt that it also has a built in webcam, 64GB SSD hard drive and a sleek look, backlit keyboard that automatically turns on when light is low. The fact that is has a bigger 13.3″ widescreen and weighs almost nothing is also very very nice. But, and there’s always a but, there are things that already annoy me a little on the Dell

TrackPoint will require some getting used to. It’s not the same as TrackPoint on a IBM/Lenovo machine!
Dell doesn’t call the TrackPoint a Track Point, but a PointingStick…WTF! (admittedly this is a small annoyance )
It only has one (yes, one!!) USB connector. I mean, seriously, what’s up with that?
The keyboard is NOT as good as on e IBM/Lenovo. This is especially painful with the mouse keys that you have ot hit exactly right for them to react…Grrrr

But overall I’m actually happy about the switch. I’ve only had it for a week so I could be on a “new gadget” high. I’m fearing the lower quality keyboard could become a real annoyance!. But DAMN, it’s silent (SSD, remember) and doesn’t produce any heat it seems!

Whoa, this became a long post about nothing really, just random thoughts – the life of the blogger. I guess having days off for Easter and Julie being in Malaga with the girls really means I have too much time on my hands

Yeah, so I’ve mentioned Flight of the Conchords here before“”…and I’ll tell you why – I love them! How can you not love a band that, in an interview, triumphantly describes themselves as “Formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo accapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo”. ?? (forth?? in New Zealand? forth!? damn dudes!…)

My minuscule writings about their true and massive awesomeness does not do the amount of time I spend online trying to find new material about them justics! (it’s kinda weird the amount of time I spend since I don’t really find any new stuff they’ve done – just old stuff that I watch/hear again). Check out their official MySpace page where you can get a taste of their musical and comedian genius-ness!

But anyway, I did stop to read their wikipedia page which I was DEeeeee–LIGHTED to see, read the following:

On April 15, 2009, Flight of the Conchords will be releasing their second full-length studio album. It will feature around 15 songs. Out of those 15, ten of those songs will be featured in the second season of their television series. The night after an episode airs, one of the new songs that made its debut in the episode will be released on iTunes as a single.

I can’t wait!!! Until then, let’s enjoy one of their songs after the break. I must stress you REALLY need to listen to lyrics to really appreciate how cool it is – in the song below, especially the part about the sneakers.
